Comments from a parent

Sue Murphy RN, Certified Asthma Educator, Public Health School Asthma Pilot Project shares a story from a parent regarding her child’s (name changed to protect identity) involvement in the Roaring Adventures of Puff Program, delivered at school.

Jane is a 6 year old girl. Like many other parents, Jane’s Mom was hesitant to send Jane’s inhaler to school. She doubted the school personnel’s ability to recognize Jane’s symptoms and was not confident in their ability to administer the inhalers if required.

Instead, Jane’s Mom would ask her child to call her if she felt short of breath or developed a cough. Her Mom would then go to the school to assess Jane and administer the inhalers. At times, when Jane had a cold or was symptomatic, Jane’s Mom would simply keep her at home until the symptoms had resolved. Shopping or visiting the hair-stylist was simply out of the question for Jane’s Mom when her child was at school, as she felt compelled to stay by the phone.

During a follow-up call, following the RAP sessions, Jane’s Mom raved about how RAP had “empowered” Jane. She had learned to avoid potential triggers, recognize asthma symptoms and voice her need for asthma medication to others.  Jane’s Mom remarked that Jane was self-sufficient at managing her asthma and was more apt to regulate her activity due to asthma symptoms.

The asthma program had empowered Jane, and increased the staff awareness at school regarding asthma management, which enabled Jane’s Mother to feel more comfortable with her child on her own, at school.

I think that this story is an example of how the asthma program has made meaningful improvements in the participant’s quality of life and has given Jane’s Mom some peace of mind when her child is at school.
