Creepy Crawlies

Target group: younger children

Supplies: large 'Snakes and Ladders' game board painted on a fabric sheet or regular size 'Snakes and Ladders' game board; written questions

Aim: to promote practical and critical thinking in relation to real life asthma scenarios.

Helpful Hint

  • Similar to Snakes and Ladders, with questions tailored to asthma management scenarios.
  • Squares are numbered from 1 - 100, with snakes and ladders in various locations. (It is a good idea to duplicate a ’Snakes and Ladders’ board when painting the snakes and ladders.)

Activity

  • Play this game in pairs. One member of the team is the ‘playing piece’, the other rolls the dice and is the ‘roller’.
  • The playing piece from each pair lines up at the ‘start square’ of the game. The game begins with the ‘roller’ of the first pair rolling the dice.
  • After rolling the dice, the pair is asked an asthma-specific question or to demonstrate an asthma-related skill.
  • If the pair correctly answers the question, the ‘playing piece’ moves forward the number of squares determined by the roll of the dice. If the new square:
  1. already has another player, the ‘playing piece’ has to remain in their current position.
  2. has a ladder, the ‘playing piece’ advances to the top of the ladder
  3. has a snake tail on their square, the ‘playing piece’ descends to the bottom of the snake
  • If the pair incorrectly answers the question, the ‘playing piece’ remains in its current position.
  • The first team to reach the ‘100’ number square wins the game.
