Haunted Airways

Target group: any age

Supplies: sheets hanging from ceiling or tunnel, mucous – optional (see recipe below), trigger pictures

Activity

  • Create an environment where the children can pretend they are walking or crawling through an airway.
  • Hang sheets from the ceiling in a curvy manner bordering a path or set up a tunnel.
  • Have volunteers on the outside of the sheets push the sheets in depicting a swollen airway.
  • The volunteers can also gently hug children as they walk through depicting tightening airways.
  • You can use the mucous recipe (see below) for the final touch if setting allows.
  • Before the children enter the airways, place a picture of a few triggers around their neck to emphasize how the lungs react when they are exposed.
  • After they have all gone through, can ask what happened in the airways and why.
  • Ask if they know how to stop the airways from doing that.
  • If time allows or at the next session, have them symbolically spray their reliever medicine in to the airways and have them walk through again. Have the volunteers make the path narrow but not hugging.
  • Then use the preventer medicine and have them walk through again. The path will be wide open. Talk about why that occurred and how that applies to them.
