- Edible Airways
Edible Airways
Target group: younger, quiet
Supplies: Marshmallows, string licorice, thick and thin straws – each about 2 inches long. (See page 12 of the Fun Book.)
Activity:
Have the children build airways. The marshmallows represent the lining of an airway. The licorice is like the muscles that are around the airways and the straws show how big the airways are.
- To make a normal airway:
- push a thick straw through the centre of a marshmallow
- take out the marshmallow that is left in the straw
- wrap a piece of string licorice loosely around the marshmallow
- ask the children to blow through the straw
- To make a worsening asthma airway:
- push a thin straw through the centre of a marshmallow
- leave the marshmallow in the straw - this represents mucous that blocks the asthmatic airway
- wrap a piece of string licorice tightly around the marshmallow – this represents how the muscles around our airways get tight during an asthma attack
- ask the children to blow through the straw – do they notice a difference?
