Summary
This may be a good activity for the last day of RAP, as it takes quite a bit of time and can be entertaining for parent to see. It can be done either indoors or outdoors.
Activity
- Children will be divided up to represent different countries, each country will be responsible to create a name, flag, national anthem/cheer, and an Olympic event. It is a good idea to make sure there is a mix of ages in each team, if possible.
- Preparation for the Olympics will take place prior to the Olympic day. This will involve such activities as making medals; each country creating an event for the day, etc.
- The Olympic day will begin with all the countries following the Olympic torch (carried by a designated child) and each country following their national flag, similar to the Olympics opening of ceremonies.
- Once the march has been completed each country will have the opportunity to sing their national anthem. RAP instructor can provide a pep talk to get the kids excited and promote sportsmanship.
- Following this, each country will send a representative to prepare the Olympians for the day. Each team can be assigned a topic such as warm-up, fluid intake, pre-medicating and cool down etc. The team's representative then provides a brief demonstration, skit, etc. to the rest of the participants on their topic. For example, the pre-medication group can show a demonstration on how to properly use an inhaler.
- Once the Olympians are prepared to participate, each country will be directed to a different event and they will rotate through the other countries events during the day. If time does not permit the children to create their own games, other activities could be used in this section for example, Rid the Triggers, Asthma Jeopardy etc. Other games could also be used, with which children are familiar, such as basketball and a variety of relay races.
- Helpers will be responsible for teaching other countries how to play the events and ensuring teams rotate between stations.
- Following the Olympics there will be a closing ceremony that will feature awarding medals and other optional prizes that the members of the countries could earn throughout the day.
