- Obstacle Course
Obstacle Course
Target group: all
Goal: To develop an understanding of asthma triggers, medications and symptom avoidance.
Size: Large group required (about 10 children)
Supplies
- paper lungs with string for participants to wear around their neck
- water guns
- hula hoops
- obstacles (i.e. pylons, benches, running with eggs on spoons, etc)
- trigger questions
- laminated asthma sentences, cut into several pieces
Activity
- The participants are split into two teams. Each team has a separate series of obstacles through which they must navigate.
- Some examples of obstacles include: running around pylons, spoon race with water, under benches, running backwards etc.
- Each participant has a set of paper lungs tied around his/her neck, and is provided with a shield (to symbolize preventer medication).
- Between the two courses are hula hoops with triggers (helpers) inside. The helpers each have a water gun and attempt to shoot the paper lungs of the children as they navigate through the course.
- Children use their shields to help protect their lungs. If hit, the participant must stop and answer a true/false question given by the helper.
- At the end of the course is a small pile of words, which make a sentence when unscrambled.
- The child picks up the words and returns to their team to unscramble the asthma sentence.
- The team shouts out the sentence when completed and the next child starts. The first team that has all its members complete the course wins the game.
