Getting to know each child and their asthma

Key Concept

Asthma is a common problem, but we can work together to improve their lives.

Know What

  • Understand other children's asthma stories.
  • Learn how others control their asthma.

Do What

  • Tell other children about their asthma experience.
  • Report feelings related to quality of life.
  • Report effectiveness of home management of asthma.
  • Identify personal goals related to asthma using the asthma wish list.
  • Interact with other students in a positive manner.

So What

  • Grow in confidence in expressing one's asthma experience (condition, experience, feelings, etc.).
  • Begin to feel comfortable with others in the group.
  • Begin to develop trust, empathy and respect for those in the group.
  • Begin to develop a sense of confidence in managing asthma.

Now What

  • Demonstrate proper use of the asthma diary to record symptoms and where appropriate peak flow readings.
  • Demonstrate proper use of the peak flow meter where prescribed.
  • Identify asthma goals and needs.

Learning Activities

  • Children share brief asthma stories (15 min)
  • Assessing children learning needs (15 min.)
  • Introducing the RAP funbook (3 min.)
  • Children develop their asthma wish list (10 min.)
  • Demonstrate use of diary and as appropriate, peak flow meter (10 min.)
  • Closing activity — What was your favourite part of today's session? (2 min.)
